Software Setup
Software Setup Guide
LightBurn installation, machine connection, and your first job. RDWorks reference also included.
LightBurn (Recommended)
LightBurn is the recommended software for all SWYFT laser cutters. Download the installer from lightburnsoftware.com and install on Windows or macOS. A 30-day free trial is available. After the trial, a one-time license ($60 as of 2025) is required. Most FTC and FRC teams use LightBurn exclusively.
Adding your machine in LightBurn
Open LightBurn. Select Devices > Create Manually. Choose Ruida as the controller type. Enter your machine's bed dimensions from the spec sheet included with your machine. Connect via USB or Ethernet. Confirm the machine appears in the bottom status bar as 'Ready'.
RDWorks (Included on USB)
RDWorks is included on the USB drive shipped with every SWYFT laser. It works without an internet connection and is compatible with all Ruida RDC controllers. RDWorks is useful as a backup and for importing .rd job files. Most teams prefer LightBurn for day-to-day use.
Importing DXF files from CAD
Export your CAD file as a DXF (AutoCAD 2013 format recommended). Import directly into LightBurn using File > Import. Assign cut layers by color. Red is typically cut, black is typically engrave — configure speed and power for each layer in the Cuts / Layers panel.
Running your first job
Place your material on the laser bed and set focus height. In LightBurn, use the frame button to preview the cut area. Review speed and power settings in the Cuts / Layers panel. Set the origin using the Set Origin button. Press Start. Monitor the first pass to verify cut depth.
